Choose or Lose #1

Choose To Stand On the Gospel

By Louie Marsh, 2- 24-2019

Intro – Frankel quote last.

1) The Gospel is good news not GOOD ADVICE.

9  I have told the glad news of deliverance in the great congregation; behold, I have not restrained my lips, as you know, O LORD. Psalm 40:9 (ESV)

“Because the Gospel is good news…it is to be announced. The essential heraldic element in preaching is bound up with the fact that the core message is not a code of ethics to be debated, still less a list of aphorisms to be admired and pondered, and certainly not a systematic theology to be outlined…though it properly ground ethics, aphorisms and systematics, it is none of these three: it is news, good news, and therefore must be publicly announced.” – D. A. Carson

  • The Gospel announces we have been

9  … how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, 10  and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come. 1 Thessalonians 1:9-10 (ESV)

  • I’m SEPARATED from God, others and even myself:

10  And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” Genesis 3:10 (ESV)

  • The Gospel is what Jesus has done to make me RIGHT WITH GOD.

14  We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers. Whoever does not love abides in death. 1 John 3:14 (ESV)

12  giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. Colossians 1:12 (ESV)

2) I must be aware of the two main ENEMIES of the Gospel.

28  As regards the gospel, they are enemies for your sake. But as regards election, they are beloved for the sake of their forefathers. Romans 11:28 (ESV)

  • LEGALISM - MORALISM

Moralism – you have to lead a good life to be saved.

28  Then they said to him, “What must we do, to be doing the works of God?” 29  Jesus answered them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent.” John 6:28-29 (ESV)

  • LICENSE – RELATIVISM

Relativism – No need to live a good life you are already saved.

1  What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound? 2  By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it?... 15  What then? Are we to sin because we are not under law but under grace? By no means! Romans Romans 6:1-2, 15 (ESV)

3) I must STAND on the Gospel and not move.

3  Beloved, although I was very eager to write to you about our common salvation, I found it necessary to write appealing to you to contend for the faith that was once for all delivered to the saints. Jude 1:3 (ESV)

  • I will always be PUSHED to move.

17  But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18  They said to you, “In the last time there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19  It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. Jude 1:17-19 (ESV)

  • People aren’t my enemy, SATAN IS.

12  For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 (ESV)

  • I must respond to this with TRUTH, LOVE & GRACE.

14  so that we may no longer be children, tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes. 15  Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ, Ephesians 4:14-15 (ESV)

20  But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21  keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22  And have mercy on those who doubt; 23  save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh. Jude 1:20-23 (ESV)
