Renewal – Life Lessons From Nehemiah

Conviction – Neh. 1

By Louie Marsh, 9-13-2020

1) God’s work always begins with CONVICTION

The words of Nehemiah the son of Hacaliah. Now it happened in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Susa the capital, that Hanani, one of my brothers, came with certain men from Judah. And I asked them concerning the Jews who escaped, who had survived the exile, and concerning Jerusalem.  And they said to me, “The remnant there in the province who had survived the exile is in great trouble and shame. The wall of Jerusalem is broken down, and its gates are destroyed by fire.” As soon as I heard these words I sat down and wept and mourned for days, and I continued fasting and praying before the God of heaven.  Nehemiah 1:1-4 (ESV)

  • What it is:

Function: noun

Date: 15th century

1: the act or process of convicting of a crime especially in a court of law. 2: a: the act of convincing a person of error or of compelling the admission of a truth b: the state of being convinced of error or compelled to admit the truth.  3: a: a strong persuasion or belief b: the state of being convinced

2) I  COME TO JESUS through conviction.

And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:  John 16:8 (ESV)

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.  Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)

Same word in both verses:  for "proof" and then for "conviction." Both uses occur in the papyri and either makes sense here, perhaps "conviction" suiting better - Word Pictures in the New Testament.

3) I SERVE JESUS with conviction.

because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit and with deep conviction. You know how we lived among you for your sake. 1 Thessalonians 1:5 (NIV)

It means the full confidence which comes from the Holy Spirit.- Word Pictures in the New Testament.

  • God wants me to be FULLY ASSURED I’m doing his will.

  • Conviction isn’t just about NEW THINGS.

Hanani, one of my brothers, came from Judah with some other men, and I questioned them about the Jewish remnant that survived the exile, and also about Jerusalem. Nehemiah 1:2 (NIV)

4) Some ways the Spirit brings conviction to me:

  • It begins with a HOLY DISCONTENT.

When I heard these things, I sat down and wept. For some days I mourned and fasted and prayed before the God of heaven. Nehemiah 1:4 (NIV)

A Popeye Moment.

  • I’m forced to FACE UP TO MY SINS.

And I said, “O Lord God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, let your ear be attentive and your eyes open, to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel your servants, confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. Even I and my father’s house have sinned.  We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded your servant Moses.  Nehemiah 1:5-7 (ESV)

  • I’m led to trust in GOD’S WORD.

"Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations, but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my Name.'  Nehemiah 1:8-9 (NIV)

  • I depend on God to do WHAT I CANNOT DO.

"They are your servants and your people, whom you redeemed by your great strength and your mighty hand.  O Lord, let your ear be attentive to the prayer of this your servant and to the prayer of your servants who delight in revering your name. Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." I was cupbearer to the king.  Nehemiah 1:10-11 (NIV)

  • I step out of my comfort zone and INTO FAITH!

…Give your servant success today by granting him favor in the presence of this man." I was cupbearer to the king.  Nehemiah 1:11b (NIV)
