I Will Not Be Afraid

A Christian Response to the Corona Virus

FEAR OF GOD VS. FEAR

10  The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever! Psalm 111:10 (ESV)

ROOTS OF FEAR

1) SEPARATION from God.

9  But the LORD God called to the man and said to him, “Where are you?” 10  And he said, “I heard the sound of you in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked, and I hid myself.” Genesis 3:9-10 (ESV)

2) Lack of CONTROL & FAITH.

28  And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” 29  He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. 30  But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me.” 31  Jesus immediately reached out his hand and took hold of him, saying to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:28-31 (ESV)

NATURE OF FEAR

1) Fear is always CONTAGIOUS.

32  So they brought to the people of Israel a bad report of the land that they had spied out, saying, “The land, through which we have gone to spy it out, is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people that we saw in it are of great height. 33  And there we saw the Nephilim (the sons of Anak, who come from the Nephilim), and we seemed to ourselves like grasshoppers, and so we seemed to them.”  1  Then all the congregation raised a loud cry, and the people wept that night. Numbers 13:32-14:1 (ESV)

2) Fear leads me away from God & into SIN.

13  For this purpose he was hired, that I should be afraid and act in this way and sin, and so they could give me a bad name in order to taunt me. Nehemiah 6:13 (ESV)

25  Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. So they said to him, “You also are not one of his disciples, are you?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” 26  One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of the man whose ear Peter had cut off, asked, “Did I not see you in the garden with him?” 27  Peter again denied it, and at once a rooster crowed. John 18:25-27 (ESV)

HOW TO DEAL WITH FEAR

1) REFOCUS my mind on God.

2  Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect. Romans 12:2 (ESV)

“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” ― Frank Herbert, Dune

14  The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15  The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16  “For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him?” But we have the mind of Christ. 1 Corinthians 2:14-16 (ESV)

“Don’t get stuck on stupid.”  - General Russel Honore

2) SUBMIT myself to the Lordship of Jesus.

1  I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Romans 12:1 (ESV)

9  Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10  so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11  and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father  Philippians 2:9-11 (ESV)

3) STEP OUT in faith – not fear!

5  Out of my distress I called on the LORD; the LORD answered me and set me free. 6  The LORD is on my side; I will not fear. What can man do to me? Psalm 118:5-6 (ESV)

28  And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Matthew 10:28 (ESV)
