Pursuing Wisdom #5

Sex, Wisdom & Fidelity

By Louie Marsh, 8-23-2020

Intro.  4 slides – last one Jesus wants it all

1) A wise person LISTENS before speaking.

1  My son, be attentive to my wisdom; incline your ear to my understanding, 2  that you may keep discretion, and your lips may guard knowledge. Proverbs 5:1-2 (ESV)

19  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; James 1:19 (ESV)

2) A wise person never BETRAYS a trust.

8  Keep your way far from her, and do not go near the door of her house, 9  lest you give your honor to others and your years to the merciless, 10  lest strangers take their fill of your strength, and your labors go to the house of a foreigner, 11  and at the end of your life you groan, when your flesh and body are consumed, 12  and you say, “How I hated discipline, and my heart despised reproof! 13  I did not listen to the voice of my teachers or incline my ear to my instructors. 14  I am at the brink of utter ruin in the assembled congregation.” Proverbs 5:8-14 (ESV)

a 2005 global survey estimated that 22 percent of married people worldwide admitted to having committed adultery. A 2016 survey suggested that in more than one-third of marriages, one or both spouses commit adultery.

78% of respondents worldwide suggest that extramarital affairs are morally unacceptable, ranging from 94% in Pakistan to 47% in France, reports a Pew Research Center survey that posed questions on a range of behaviors

Men are more likely to commit adultery than women. In the United States, for example, national surveys of married couples found that 25 percent of men and 15 percent of women admitted to committing adultery

3) A wise person knows what to keep PRIVATE.

15  Drink water from your own cistern, flowing water from your own well. 16  Should your springs be scattered abroad, streams of water in the streets? 17  Let them be for yourself alone, and not for strangers with you. 18  Let your fountain be blessed, and rejoice in the wife of your youth, 19  a lovely deer, a graceful doe. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight; be intoxicated always in her love. Proverbs 5:15-19 (ESV)

Show Poster

The Sundance drama “Cuties” is a coming-of-age story about a girl from Senegal, but her story is a universal one that shows that we’d all rather dance than have to grow up and face the world.

Netflix picked up the inspiring film “Cuties” out of Sundance from director and writer Maïmouna Doucouré after it won the Directing Award in the World Cinema Dramatic category at the festival earlier this year.

In “Cuties,” an 11-year-old girl from Senegal Amy tries to escape family dysfunction by joining a free-spirited dance clique named “Cuties.” The group stands in stark contrast to her mother’s traditional values, and she soon becomes aware of her own femininity well beyond her years through dance. She soon inspires the girls to embrace more sensual dance moves as part of their routine even as she begins to face the realities of growing up, and they hope to twerk their way to stardom at a local dance contest.

  • There are no real relationships without

24  Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25  And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed. Genesis 2:24-25 (ESV)

4) A wise person know God will judge EVERYONE & EVERYTHING.

21  For a man’s ways are before the eyes of the LORD, and he ponders all his paths. 22  The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him, and he is held fast in the cords of his sin. 23  He dies for lack of discipline, and because of his great folly he is led astray. Proverbs 5:21-23 (ESV)

34  You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35  The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36  I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37  for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” Matthew 12:34-37 (ESV)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  • With the rise of the internet & social media, is anything private anymore?
  • How do I know what’s good to keep private & what needs to be exposed?

3) Why do so many people today seem commit-a-phobic?
