The Easter Effect, Pt. 2

The Judas Effect

By Louie Marsh, 4-5-2020

Intro – 3 slides.

1) God is PREPARED for whatever comes my way.

9  Then was fulfilled what had been spoken by the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him on whom a price had been set by some of the sons of Israel, 10  and they gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.” Matthew 27:9-10 (ESV)

2) Jesus TRUSTED God’s Plan, I should too.

  • Jesus CHOSE Judas

13  And when day came, he called his disciples and chose from them twelve, whom he named apostles:…16  and Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. Luke 6:13,16 (ESV)

  • Jesus KNEW Judas would betray Him

64  But there are some of you who do not believe.” (For Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him.) John 6:64 (ESV)

12  While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. John 17:12 (ESV)

"None of them perished, but the son of perishing" (Westcott). - Word Studies in the New Testament.

The word "perdition" occurs in the English Bible 8 times (John 17:12; Phil. 1:28; 2 Thes. 2:3; 1 Tim. 6:9; Hebrews 10:39; 2 Peter 3:7; Rev. 17:11, 18). In each of these cases it denotes the final state of ruin and punishment which forms the opposite to salvation. - The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia.

9  But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. 1 Timothy 6:9 (ESV)

3) Jesus faced Satan & I will too.

  • Satan POSSESSED Judas

3  Then Satan entered into Judas called Iscariot, who was of the number of the twelve. Luke 22:3 (ESV)

2  During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, John 13:2 (ESV)

  • Jesus CONFRONTED Satan face to face.

25  So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26  Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27  Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” John 13:25-27 (ESV)

4) God’s GRACE ends the Judas Effect.

  • Same Sin Different

3  Then when Judas, his betrayer, saw that Jesus was condemned, he changed his mind and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and the elders, 4  saying, “I have sinned by betraying innocent blood.” They said, “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” 5  And throwing down the pieces of silver into the temple, he departed, and he went and hanged himself. Matthew 27:3-5 (ESV)

74  Then he began to invoke a curse on himself and to swear, “I do not know the man.” And immediately the rooster crowed. 75  And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the rooster crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly. Matthew 26:74-75 (ESV)

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

1) Louie talked about God having a plan for everything in your life, even the worst things. Does this encourage or discourage you?  What purpose is served by allowing us to go through betrayal and pain?

2) Jesus faced Satan, in the body of Judas, over the table what do you think they both were feeling? Why didn’t Jesus just destroy him then and there?

3) When you’ve sinned in a way you never thought you would, did you ever feel the Judas Effect? Were you too ashamed to return to God and repent in tears like Peter did? Why do people feel this way?
